Find the Right Contractor

As with any trade, it is often difficult to select the right contractor to do the job. The following may help determine if the contractor meets your needs and requirements:

• Ask for the contractor's State license number to ensure he is properly licensed.
• Ask for proof of Worker's Compensation insurance. If a worker is injured on your property and the contractor does not carry insurance, you may be liable for medical expenses.
• Ask for proof of liability insurance. If damage is done to your property, who is responsible for repairs?
• Ask for pricing criteria and payment options.
• Ask about product warranty, including the contractor's warranty and the manufacturer's warranty.
• Ask about pricing and policy on follow-up calls in the event of an intermittent or persistent problem.
• If purchasing new equipment, ask about the product and how long the company has been selling that product.
• Ask about replacement parts, including availability and pricing.
• Ask if the contractor will obtain the permit, if required.
• Ask for referrals.
• Ask if the contractor has a website.
• Ask if the contractor is a member of the BBB or other organizations which reflect moral and ethical standards.
• Obtain a report from the Better Business Bureau.
